The
art of making carpets by hand using
the finest materials is cherished
and nurtured by Patan Karnali. Each
carpet is carefully crafted, the
methods
virtually unchanged from
time beyond memory, using
traditional techniques in the
service of contemporary design. The
glowing imperfections of natural
materials and the variations of the
human touch are in every stage of
the process, the result of a
commitment to promote individuality
and inspiration in all of its
production. Truly, each carpet is
unique unto
itself, conceived in a journey
through a sea of human hands weaving
it into existence.
The process outlined below focuses
on the production of hand-made
Tibetan Carpet. |

Virtues Of The Wool
Tibetan highland wool is long-fibred
and rich in wool fat. A guarantee
for robust rugs and brilliant
colors. The wool is washed and
rinsed thoroughly. Soiled fibres are
sorted out by hand. They are then
laid out in the sun to dry. |

Carding

The first step in the creation of
rich yarns is called carding. The
process of hand carding involves
brushing
and combing of a handful of wool
placed between two metal-toothed
brushes until the fibers are roughly
aligned. It is a labor-intensive
process that has been traditionally
used to prepare wool for spinning.
While a machine could comb the wool
and align its fibers in the blink of
an eye, it would break the fibers
and make the resulting yarn too
uniform. By comparison, hand carding
respects the precious fibers, and
the resulting yarn is very natural
and distinctively raw. No doubt, the
hand carding is a time consuming
process. But the quality of yarn it
spins into has no match. |
